Deploying SharePoint application as Internet and Intranet application

I want to understand how same sharepoint applicant can be accessed from internet and intranet as a same time. For Intranet, it should take windows authentication and directly land to Home Page while in case of Internet, it should ask for authentication and then move forward.

Secondly, how implementing ISA server in this scenario would help.

You pose a great question here. I hope that many people would add value and respond. I am assuming that you are asking about providing content to, both, internal and external people. The center to all user request is IIS 6.0 / 7.0. SharePoint does have a feature called the Alternate Access Path. What that does in a nutshell is all the path taken to remain relavent to the web application. That is, the hostname (http://intranet.discoversharepoint.net or http://internet.discoversharepoint.net).

The fact that you mentioned ISA further add features that would allow, what I call, hostname mapping. For instance, a user wants to access a web application hosted by Discover SharePoint IT. The web application exist behinds the Discover firewall. ISA would take your external URL (http://www.discoversharepoint.net) and map it to your internal URL (http://ds). I hope that helps.
